Preserving Seed Biodiversity and with New Eco Beauty Brand Seed Phytonutrients
"In the past century, 93% of seed varieties have been lost due to many factors including over-commercialization."
Once in a while, you hear of a brand's story that just really stands out to you because it reveals something totally new and different, taking our current expectations of eco-conscious brands to another level. Seed Phytonutrients is one of those brands.
With agrobiodiversity (diversity of crop species grown in agriculture) having dramatically declined in the last century, we have an urgent need to support independent farmers who are still intentionally preserving and harvesting our lesser-known seed varieties to ensure we'll have healthy soils and rich agricultural ecosystems for centuries to come.
And who knew it would be an eco beauty brand that would connect me with this cause and allow me as one consumer to be able to help preserve seed diversity? In addition to knowing the ingredients are plant-based and do not contain sulphates, artificial fragrance, and petrochemicals, I feel like my use of these products has a greater sense of purpose. And if you know me, you know I'm all about celebrating the stories behind our clothes and consumer products in order to live more meaningful, enriched lives.
For the past weeks, I've been testing out the "Daily Hair Cleanser," "Lightweight Conditioner," and "Hand Salve." The shampoo doesn't really foam, but this is quite standard for cleansers without artificial foaming agents. I'm used to this from the past products I've used, and to me it just means that it's a mild cleanser that as stated, can be used daily. My hair is quite thick, so I appreciate that the conditioner is purposefully made to be lightweight. Across both of these products, I can feel that there are no filler ingredients - meaning I can use the products super sparingly on my head of thick hair while being able to clean my scalp refreshingly, hydrate and smooth out my hair ends, and smell amazing afterwards! (I see in its collection that it's also got a "Heavy Duty Conditioner" for other hair types as well, because different things work for different people.)
And the hand salve?
As with any other skincare product, I tested this on the inside of my wrist for a few days prior to using in larger amounts all over my hands and arms, as I have sensitive skin and sometimes will have allergic reactions to particular natural ingredients.
But truth be told, this has been my favorite product to use first thing in the morning, and last thing at night before I go to bed. The natural aroma is so soothing and really connects me to the origin of these ingredients. I'm in love.
As I continue to slowly test out its other products over a longer period of time, I'll have more insights on their performance properties as it takes time for our skin to adjust to new products.
"Our philosophy is simple. Everything we do is with the purpose of... preserving seed diversity, promoting natural beauty, supporting organic farms and farmers, and leading environmental sustainability."

For now, the most impressive parts for me are the brand's dedication to preserving seed diversity, and its innovative development of the packaging material.
The bottle itself is cardboard made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper, and the thin plastic bag on the inside holding the liquid is made of 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. And yes - I intentionally sprayed water on the bottle in the shower and it remained intact. The paper is, as stated, shower-proof!
Supposedly, there's also something hiding in that cardboard bottle waiting for me to discover when I finish using the product - packets of heirloom herb seeds so I can finally start my own mini balcony garden and directly help to preserve our much-needed seed diversity. Now I can't wait to finish this entire bottle... although it might take me a while since I only use tiny amounts each shower. Stay tuned!
To protect seeds from over-commercialization, we partner with independent, American organic farmers to harness the power of local seed varieties to create elevated natural products that make us look good and feel good."
